This house is located within the Mosman Conservation Area in New South Wales, Australia, where maintaining the integrity of the external design from the street is a key consideration. In response to this constraint, the front facade remains untouched, and the design focuses on extending the house toward the rear to maximize living space.
The client expressed a preference for modern living while preserving the heritage character of the home, which was an ideal fit with the design restrictions. The concept revolves around blending a timeless architectural aesthetic with contemporary functionality, reflecting the idea of how the house might have been built 100 years ago, but with modern interior spaces.
To achieve this, we simplified the roof design by removing the box gutter and extending the roofline toward the rear, creating a more streamlined and cohesive form. The interior spaces, including the kitchen, dining, and living areas, are designed to flow seamlessly into one another. Drawing inspiration from Japandi design principles, the spaces also establish a strong connection to the backyard, fostering a harmonious relationship between the interior and the surrounding landscape
